Standard Paintball vs. Low Impact Paintball: Which is Right for You?

Paintball is an exhilarating outdoor sport that has gained immense popularity over the years. With various formats and versions available, players have the opportunity to choose a style that suits their preferences and comfort level. Two of the most popular formats are standard paintball and low impact paintball. In this blog post, we'll explore the key differences between these two variations, helping you make an informed decision about which one might be the best fit for your paintball adventure.

Standard Paintball

Standard paintball, often referred to simply as "paintball," is the original and most widely recognized form of the sport. It involves players using air-powered markers (also known as paintball guns) to shoot paint-filled capsules at opponents. Here are some key characteristics of standard paintball:

1. Paintball Size: In standard paintball, the paintballs used are .68 caliber, which means they have a diameter of approximately 0.68 inches. These paintballs are larger and contain more paint than low impact paintballs.

2. Impact and Pain: One of the defining features of standard paintball is the impact it delivers when a paintball hits a player. Due to the larger size and higher velocity of standard paintballs, they can sting more upon impact.

3. Equipment: Standard paintball markers are typically more powerful and have a longer range than low impact markers. Players often wear thicker and more protective gear, including masks, helmets, vests, and gloves.

4. Age Restrictions: Due to the higher intensity and potential for pain, standard paintball often has age restrictions, with some facilities, including NR Adventure Park, limiting participation to players aged 10 or older.

Low Impact Paintball

Low impact paintball, on the other hand, was developed as a more accessible and family-friendly version of the sport. It is designed to provide a less intense experience, making it suitable for beginners, younger players, and those who may be apprehensive about the pain associated with standard paintball. Here are the key differences for low impact paintball:

1. Paintball Size: Low impact paintballs are smaller, with a .50 caliber, approximately half the size of standard paintballs. This results in a reduced amount of paint in each ball.

2. Impact and Pain: Low impact paintball is known for its reduced impact and pain when a paintball hits a player. The smaller size and lower velocity of these paintballs make them less painful, which is why it's often chosen for family outings and beginner players.

3. Equipment: Low impact paintball markers are specifically designed to shoot the smaller .50 caliber paintballs at a lower velocity. Players wear lighter and less restrictive gear compared to standard paintball.

4. Age and Accessibility: Low impact paintball is suitable for a wider range of ages, often accommodating players as young as 8 years old. It's an ideal choice for families and groups with mixed age ranges.

Conclusion

The choice between standard paintball and low impact paintball ultimately depends on your personal preferences and the kind of experience you seek. Standard paintball offers a more intense and adrenaline-pumping experience, while low impact paintball provides a gentler and more family-friendly introduction to the sport. Whether you're a seasoned paintball enthusiast or a first-time player, both formats offer exciting opportunities for teamwork, strategy, and outdoor fun. Be sure to consider your age, pain tolerance, and desired level of intensity when deciding which version of paintball is right for you, and don't forget to prioritize safety and follow all the rules and guidelines provided by our paintball facility.
